Mercedes GLS63 AMG Known Issues by Engine
If your GLS63 AMG has the M157 (X166 generation, 2012–2019): this 5.5-litre twin-turbo V8 is known for valve seal and coolant system wear over time — an established pattern across AMG V8s of this era. We replace valve seals, timing chain components, coolant components and bearings as standard on every M157 rebuild.
If your GLS63 AMG has the M177 (X167 generation, 2019–present): this 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 shares a similar valve seal and coolant system wear pattern with its predecessor. We replace valve seals, timing chain components, coolant components and bearings as standard on every M177 rebuild.

ABOUT THE MERCEDES GLS63 AMG ENGINE

The GLS63 AMG has been the range-topping performance variant of Mercedes' full-size SUV since its introduction on the X166 generation in 2012, continuing through to the current X167 generation. The first-generation GLS63 (then badged as GL63 AMG) used the M157 — a 5.5-litre twin-turbo V8, a well-known AMG powerplant from that era. The current X167-generation car switched to the M177 — a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 shared with a wide range of AMG models, including the GLE63 and S63. Both engines are hand-built AMG units, and both share a similar pattern of valve seal and coolant system wear over time — which is why we address these components as standard on every GLS63 AMG rebuild, regardless of which generation you own.
We continue to rebuild and replace M256 engines for every GLS63 AMG on the road.
MERCEDES GLS63 AMG ENGINE CODES

M157 (X166, 2012–2019)
A 5.5-litre twin-turbo V8 fitted to the GLS63 AMG (and previously the GL63 AMG) from 2012 to 2019. Known for valve seal and coolant system wear — see the callout above. We replace valve seals, timing chain components, coolant components and bearings as standard on every M157 rebuild.

M177 (X167, 2019–present)
A 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 fitted to the current-generation GLS63 AMG from 2019 onwards. Shares a similar valve seal and coolant system wear pattern with its predecessor. We replace valve seals, timing chain components, coolant components and bearings as standard on every M177 rebuild.
Check Your M177 GLS63 AMGMERCEDES GLS63 AMG ENGINE COMPATIBILITY

Because the GLS63 AMG spans two distinct twin-turbo V8 engines across two generations, fitting the wrong replacement — or assuming an M157 part will work on an M177 car — risks a compatibility problem that's expensive to unpick. Before we quote or supply anything, we confirm:
Your exact engine code (M256) via registration or VIN
Your generation (R190)
Drivetrain and ancillary specification
Any electronics or ECU considerations specific to your exact build
This is why we always start with your registration rather than a generic GLS quote — it protects you from paying for parts that don't fit your actual car.
