The M256 is a sophisticated 3.0-litre inline-six with an integrated starter-generator and electric auxiliary compressor — a more modern and efficient design than the older M276 V6. We replace timing chains, bearings, water pump and gaskets as standard on every M256 rebuild.
Because the SPRINTER (2023+, STANDARD OUTPUT) uses a completely different engine family from the V8 M178 fitted to the Sprinter 63 and GT 63 S, parts and rebuild specifications don't cross over between them.

ABOUT THE MERCEDES SPRINTER (2023+, STANDARD OUTPUT) ENGINE
The 2023+ Sprinter standard output represents a significant change for Mercedes' commercial vehicle range — the 3.0-litre V6 diesel (OM642) was discontinued for the 2023 model year, replaced across the board by this 2.0-litre four-cylinder OM654 unit. The standard output version produces 168hp via a single-turbo configuration, sitting alongside the High Output variant which uses a twin-turbo setup for 208hp. This engine is not a development of the outgoing V6 — it's a different family entirely, with its own characteristics and rebuild requirements. The Sprinter remains in production, and we continue to rebuild and replace engines for every one on the road.
