The M256 is a sophisticated 3.0-litre inline-six with an integrated starter-generator and electric auxiliary compressor — a more modern and efficient design than the older M276 V6. We replace timing chains, bearings, water pump and gaskets as standard on every M256 rebuild.
Because the S560 uses a completely different engine family from the V8 M178 fitted to the S-Class 63 and GT 63 S, parts and rebuild specifications don't cross over between them.

ABOUT THE MERCEDES S560 ENGINE
The S560 was introduced in 2017 as a V8-powered variant in the W222 S-Class range, replacing the earlier S500 in some markets. It uses the M176 — a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 that's part of Mercedes' modular V8 family, related to the M177 and M178 used in AMG models. The S560 sat between the six-cylinder diesel and petrol variants and the high-performance AMG models, offering V8 character without the full AMG price or running costs. The M176 in the S560 was available in both rear- and all-wheel-drive (4MATIC) form, and the variant was produced until the W223 generation replaced it in 2020.

A 3.0-litre inline-six petrol mild-hybrid engine fitted to the S560 from 2023 to present. The M256 features an integrated starter-generator (ISG) and electric auxiliary compressor, making it a more modern and efficient design than the older M276 V6. We replace timing chains, bearings, water pump and gaskets as standard on every M256 rebuild.
