What Engine Bearing Replacement Involves
Engine bearing replacement is a bottom-end rebuild operation. We remove the engine from the vehicle, mount it on a stand, and carry out the following steps:
- Access & Disassembly — Drain fluids, remove all external components (manifolds, turbochargers, accessories), and strip the engine to access the crankshaft.
- Crankshaft Removal — Remove the oil pan and crankshaft to expose the main bearing shells and connecting rod bearings.
- Bearing Replacement — Fit new OEM-spec main and connecting rod bearing shells, using colour-coded matching to the crankshaft and block. Replace thrust washers where fitted.
- Clearance Measurement — Verify bearing clearances with Plastigage or dial bore gauges to ensure they meet factory specifications.
- Reassembly — Install new torque-to-yield bolts, follow precise torque sequences and angles, and replace all gaskets and seals.
- Testing — Run the engine on a test stand or in-vehicle to verify oil pressure, temperature, and overall performance before handover.
We use genuine Mercedes parts and OE-spec consumables throughout. Every rebuild includes a full inspection of all bottom-end components.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is engine bearing replacement always part of a full rebuild?+
Yes. Bearings cannot be replaced in isolation on Mercedes engines without fully stripping the bottom end. We always perform a complete rebuild, replacing bearings, seals, gaskets, and any other worn components.
How do you ensure the correct bearing clearances?+
We measure crankshaft journals with precision micrometers and dial bore gauges. We then select the correct colour-coded bearing shells from the Mercedes-supplied set and verify clearance with Plastigage.
Do you reuse the old bolts?+
Never. All main bearing cap and connecting rod bolts are torque-to-yield and must be replaced with new ones. We use genuine Mercedes bolts every time.
How long does the work take?+
Typically, the engine is removed, rebuilt, and refitted within 3-5 working days, depending on the model and any additional work required.
Can you collect my vehicle?+
Yes. We offer nationwide recovery from £70. Most vehicles are collected within a few hours of booking.
